About

Professor Emeritus, Art Department, California State University in Sacramento, Maria Winkler has an MFA in painting and drawing, and a PhD in art education. A practicing and exhibiting artist, her paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Boise Art Museum, Boise, Idaho; California League of Women Artists, Sacramento, CA; Kaiser Permanente’s Public Art Collection, the University of California Medical Center’s Public Art Collection, and a number of corporate art collections. Her work also appears in published form as posters, art cards, teaching aids, and books. Her biography appears in World’s Who’s Who of Women in Education and also in Who’s Who in American Art. She is also a book artist, whose handmade artist books have been extensively shown and published in catalogs and books.

Maria's work has always been inspired by events in her life and her love of nature. Based on her travels and photography, she transforms natural scenes into abstract compositions, focusing on the interplay of light, shadow, and time of day, as seen in the Waterscapes Series. Her Landscapes and Water-scapes series is primarily focused on endangered habitats, such as wetlands, vernal pools and marshes. Her Feminist Series express social and cultural concerns regarding women.

Her Glass Arrangement Series is a collection of work in colored pencil, watercolor, and with the use of special Yupo and watercolor papers. This mixed-media collection shows paintings and drawing of glass work in bottles, vessels, and marbles.

In addition to her paintings, Maria's Artists' Books express her social and political concerns in various book forms that are almost sculptural in form.
